So, I was inspired to get some sidewalk poetry going by this post on Teaching Young Writers… Today I set out with 5 kindergarteners–Martha, Brianna, Cayden, Brisyn and Isaac–to see what kind of chalky-goodness we could bring to the Bronx. After a brief, moderately successful lesson in similes, here’s what we got:

Jets fast
Some jets slow
Some jets GO! GO!
Jets win!
by Cayden

Waves.
Splash.
Fun!!
by Isaac

Motorcycles
Go fast
But not as fast
As a cheetah.
by Brisyn

Sad.
Sad is
like the rain.
Rain is like
the tears
that come
from your
eyes.
by Martha

Flowers
are happy to
grow.
Like Christmas.
by Brianna

And I couldn’t resist adding my own…

Thanks for a great idea! We loved watching the looks on the faces of passersby as they walked through our poems. 🙂
