I don’t want much tonight. I’d really just like to write one, good sentence about my day. It doesn’t actually have to be a good sentence (since my day, as a whole, wasn’t terribly good), but I’d love it to be a well-written one.
I went on a hunt for good sentences around the interwebs. I found lots of lovely examples here and here (in case you, too are looking for good sentences). Whatever I write will likely never live up to:
“Closing Sohrab’s door, I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded, not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.”
Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner
For tonight, I’ll retire to bed (relatively) satisfied with this:
It was inevitable: the mix of light and shadows that crept into her living room at precisely 8:56 each evening always evoked a sense of melancholy, reminding her once again of the sad fate of far too many evaporated moments.

Such sadness in this sentence! I think you should be proud of the sentence you came up with – you captured emotion and images beautifully!

“Evaporated moments” that is really how they go.

Crafting that perfect sentence that conveys all that it needs to convey and evokes all that it needs to evoke is certainly not easy. Your sentence is one to be proud of. Wonderful imagery and emotion. I think it’s an amazing, thought-provoking sentence. I want to know more…

Focusing in on a single sentence is an excellent exercise, for us and for student writers — make the small bits as good as possible, and the rest will take care of itself. How often do our students get the time to put a lot into a single sentence when they’re asked to produce extended pieces of timed writing? This would be a great 365-day exercise: the sentence of your day. Thanks for the inspiration and the superb sentence! 🙂
